How important is it to do an internship before applying for a job? Do you need to get the hands-on experience? During the school year, students may feel overwhelmed with homework, sports, and curricular activities that keep them extremely busy while leaving no time to think of doing an internship or a job. Internships are proven to gain relevant knowledge, skills, and experience while establishing important connections in the field. Internships are also a way to find out if a specific field is something a student could see oneself doing full-time. Employers love to have interns and volunteers. It allows them to try out a potential employee to see if they will fit into the culture of the organization and if the skills they have are what the employer is looking for. If the organization is not currently hiring, they may know someone who is hiring. Personal references are great ways to get a job a student is interested in. By doing a great job and completing more than what is required of in an internship, students will be creating a great impression that can provide a great reference letter and even lead to a potential job offer. When students leave the organization at the end of the internship, they should ask for a recommendation letter that they can keep for future reference. Internships are a great way to learn about the field which has a great advantage of opportunity. Seniors shouldn’t take the experience lightly. Seniors develop a sense of workforce expectations. They’ll have an ability to work very well with professionals in their field. I believe that an internship is a great way to make connections and seeing people in action. Internships offers me the opportunity to work in a position I’d like to hold one day. For example, I am looking to intern at a manufacturing company. I don’t know what position I would be in but being involved in manufacturing sounds pretty cool to me. Internships help me have an opportunity to actually work in manufacturing before high school ends. Internships is a great way to work in a position that I might have one day after high school. All in all, it is important to take the time to highly consider an internship or volunteer experience. This is your time to shine. Get to know the people who are in your field; this doesn’t just include upper management. Get to know everyone and learn from them. Ask them questions and discuss opportunities. Build those relationships continuously and keep them active.
