Feed Me, Seymour
Every Friday morning, the Greenmen Cafe draws in large crowds of ravenous teens. The breakfast sandwiches, snacks, and beverages provide a nice pick me up for hungry and tired students. According to Shake Up Your Wake Up, 25% of people are skipping breakfast once or more during the week, with more than 13% never eating it.
Unfortunately, this benefit is only available one day a week. Students believe it would be beneficial to all if the Greenmen Cafe opened up for more than one day; the Greenmen Cafe does a wonderful job of getting our special needs department some real world work experience so another day only improves their education, and students get food for another day.
There are many reasons why a student may not be able to eat before school at home; students may not have enough time to eat in the morning or they may just not be hungry so early. For example, of women who skip breakfast, 29% miss it because they are too busy getting ready and 14% of female breakfast skippers say they don’t eat in the morning because they are trying to lose or watch their weight
Having food available will keep students better nourished which in turn will keep them more awake and alert, improving their education.
The Cafe uses their profits for a field trip for their students, all proceeds go directly towards it. By adding another day to their schedule, this can allow them to make more money to afford a better trip, whatever it may be.
Some students have recommended the school itself pay to provide students with breakfast options every day, which would be nice but it would take away from our fellow students in the special needs department. This way, the program can exceed previous profits and more students will be fed.
Secondly, since the Greenmen Cafe is a departmentally funded program, the school would not be responsible for any extra costs, and extra profits would help to pay for an increase in any funds for the Cafe.
