In today’s world, everyone is using the internet. More often than not people are using the internet to watch tv, whether it be informational or entertainment. What if there was one website that had everything you could possibly want to watch...live?
“Welcome to a community where millions of people and thousands of interests collide in a beautiful explosion of video games, pop culture, and conversation. With chat built into every stream, you don’t just watch on Twitch, you’re a part of the show. From classic tv show marathons to esports tournaments, if you can imagine it, it’s probably live on Twitch right now.” said Twitch.tv’s about page ( twitch.tv/about )
Twitch.tv is a live broadcasting station, anyone can create an account and stream whatever, whenever. It is free to watch and follow, but you can pay to subscribe to someone’s channel. There are different tiers of subscription, starting with $4.99 a month, going to $9.99 a month and ending with $24.99 a month. People subscribe not only to support the streamer, but to watch adfree, use emoticons, have customized messages, and to have a subscriber badge by your username in chat. Now you can even gift a subscription to someone! (So if someone were to gift me a subscription I would have the subscription without paying)
Twitch.tv uses bits as currency, you can pay money to buy them like on a mobile game, or watch ads to get 5 bits for free. You can use the bits to cheer, which acts as a donation to the streamer. For example, I could type into chat !Cheer1 and donate 1 bit to the streamer. The top cheer will be displayed at the top of chat for everyone to see!
One of the best things about twitch.tv compared to normal tv is the variety of streams. Some cook, and there are so many people cooking different things in different ways. Some play instruments, you can type to them in chat what you want to hear. Most people play video games, and there are a variety of streams for just one game. The variety of streams is endless and always evolving to what people want to see.
In 2015 there was an average of 550,000 concurrent viewers, peaking at 2,098,529 concurrent viewers. The peak concurrent broadcasters (streamers) was 35,610. Also, twitch broadcasters (streamers) logged 241,441,823,059 minutes streamed, that’s 459,366 years!!!! The average viewer watched 421.6 minutes monthly.
“The global growth of the Twitch platform continued in 2015. Twitch is now available in more countries than ever before, and even has dedicated viewers in places as remote as Antarctica. For real. No Kappa.” said Twitch.tv’s 2015 Retrospective page. ( twitch.tv/year/2015 )
