Haunting memories from the past return.

Like in the other Insidious films, in Insidious: The Last Key you follow Elise Rainier, a parapsychologist who can see into the other world, as she uses her abilities to help rid home of the devilish spirits lurking in the dark. Though there is one major difference in this movie; the case that Elise is working requires her to return to her childhood home. Not only does Elise have to hunt down the spirit tormenting the new owner of this house but she must face the demons from her past; including the one she accidentally set free years ago.

In the most recent Insidious film the audience learns more than ever about Elise and how she grew up. Elise has had her gift to see into the other world all her life. As a little girl she would get visions and would know all kinds of things that she shouldn’t be able to know, like what the last words and meal of an inmate on death row were seconds after his death. While her mother loved her unconditionally in spite of her gift, her father on the other hand, hated it. If Elise had claimed to see a spirit his reaction was to try to beat the ability out of her. While in previous films there may have been suspicions that Elise may not have had the best home life, this confirms it. She was constantly abused by her father until she ran away when she was sixteen, leaving her younger brother behind.

The plot was easy to follow and the story, especially Elise’s backstory, was really interesting. There were plenty of twists and turns and there is a moment in the movie where there is a pretty cool plot twist that adds the the story line. And I do feel that this was a great way to end this franchise because it tied in plot lines from the other movies. But this film is kind of an “eh” movie. As a horror movie it did its job of providing scares and a fun night with friends. But as a movie itself I didn’t walk out feeling any different than I had when I walked in.

Overall, I don’t think you should go see it in theaters; if you are a big fan of the franchise and want to see the last movie I would wait until it’s on Netflix or Redbox. The theater experience is not necessary. I do feel like it is a nice movie for a ‘scary movie night’ with friends or a date but I don’t feel like it’s worth the money you would pay going to see it in the movie theater.
