ASPCA Needs Our Help!!!
We need to come together to help animals that cannot help their own situations. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world.
The organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. ASPCA’s mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.”
As an animal lover myself, I think this organization is extremely helpful for not only animals but for people too. I adopted my cat, Dipalo, from an animal shelter. When he was a homeless kitten, his tail was run over and the shelter’s only option was to cut off his tail and care for him for the next year until he was recovered, healthy, and socialized. Dipalo was the best cat I have ever owned. After 17 years of living an adventurous life with me, he died of natural causes.
Thinking back I am so grateful to the people at that shelter because they saved him and he made my childhood so full of love. If I ever have the means to care for another animal, I will definitely go to another shelter to help an animal in need of a loving home.
“Helping vulnerable animals and keeping pets in safe and loving homes requires a commitment from all of us—advocates, pet owners, shelters, leaders, and entire communities. When we work together under a common cause, we’re both saving lives and elevating our society and its laws to ensure cruelty victims and other at-risk animals receive the protection and care they deserve.” ~ Matthew Bershadker ASPCA President and CEO
Their key issues are animal cruelty and animal homelessness. Their responses to these issues are animal rescue, animal placement, and animal protection. Even though they are headquartered in NYC they are very effective nationally. 11,503 animals assisted or rescued, 85,151 spay/neuter surgeries performed, 4,290 animals adopted from ASPCA adoption centers, $14 million granted to Animal Welfare Organizations, 459,700 advocacy emails sent to lawmakers by ASPCA Advocacy Brigade in 2015, 2.5 million active supporters, and 1.5 million Facebook fans.
The ASPCA website, https://www.aspca.org/about-us, offers ample information to people to help them be a part of the solution. They offer advice to new pet owners; dog care, cat care, horse care, animal poison control and animal planning. They also provide ways to take action; advocacy center, report animal cruelty, share your story, how to volunteer at ASPCA, help farm animals, ASPCA careers, and most importantly they provide the current issues or animal cases they are working on. ASPCA also works to help people adopt, whether it be simply listing nearby adoption centers or displaying the pet of the week and success stories. They also provide ways to give, since they are a non-profit organization. You can even donate your old car!
As a school, let’s come together and fund raise for ASPCA! We can make treats for pets, and all the proceeds would go to ASPCA.
