Planned Parenthood Funding Demythed
There has been many debates over Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that provides reproductive health care in the United States and globally. Most controversial issues that arise are due to lack of education about how Planned Parenthood helps people. Currently, in debates over Obamacare and Trump’s plans, people mention Planned Parenthood possibly being defunded and argue about its link abortion. The solution to this problem, is education, which will lead to global awareness.
What most people do not understand is how Planned Parenthood is funded. Most of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding is from Medicaid reimbursements for preventive care, and some is from Title X. (Preventive care is the care you receive to prevent illnesses or diseases. It also includes counseling to prevent health problems)There’s no Planned Parenthood fund in the federal budget! Basically, if a people can afford the visit, or services provided, then they will pay. If they cannot afford the visit or services provided then Planned Parenthood will submit a claim to Medicaid and Medicaid will reimburse Planned Parenthood.
Whenever people talk about Planned Parenthood abortion always comes up. To make it perfectly clear to all who are pro-life, Planned Parenthood does not pay for abortions. If a woman was raped, or was a part of an incest relationship, or has a life threatening medical condition, then and only then, can Planned Parenthood submit claims to reimburse the cost of the procedure. (If the patient can not afford the cost)
Some argue that contraception and teaching sex-education is morally wrong. However, contraception and sex-education is not ‘anti-life’. Children are a life-long commitment; women who are using birth control or practicing other preventative methods value their freedom to decide when they are ready to bring a child into this world.
What would happen if Planned Parenthood was defunded? Their infrastructure would deteriorate, resulting in many women not having a place to go. At least 60% of Planned Parenthood patients rely on public health programs like Medicaid and Title X for their preventive and primary care. “The Guttmacher Institute has run the numbers on both Title X and U.S. programs providing family planning services and information to poor women in developing countries. Here's what they found. If the president and Congress eliminate all funding for Title X, the number of abortions will increase by nearly 280,000 a year. Cut off funding for international assistance, and the number of induced abortions increase by 2.3 million. In addition, Guttmacher estimates that 11,000 women in developing countries would die from unsafe abortions in developing countries.”
Now- It is time for you to use your power; talk to your congressmen, talk to your friends and family that can vote. Together we can make a change for the better. Let’s make Planned Parenthood even more effective with helping people get the healthcare they need.
