Poetry is the 'magic trick' of this book.

There are books that you read to enjoy and then there are books you read to feel something. Depression & other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim is both.

The 70 page poetry book takes you through the tribulations of having depression while also trying to maintain your normal life. talks about dating, her family, and her work life all while tying in these beautiful concepts of self love and learning to trust. It’s a constant mix of emotions that change with every page flip.

Sabrina Benaim is a 25 year old poet from Toronto, Canada. She has struggled with depression since her early twenties and has many stories from before and after her diagnosis, she feels the need to share. She hopes to break down the stigmas surrounding depression and other mental illnesses with her poetry.

Depression & Other Magic tricks is a wonderfully written book that captivates you even after you’ve finished. You will continue to reach for it again and again. If you’ve ever had to deal with the topics mentioned in the book, it becomes a sort of best friend who completely understands what you’ve gone through, and helps you get through it again.

On the other hand if you’ve never dealt with an absent parent or any sort of mental illness you may have a hard time connecting as deeply to this piece of literature. Or if you don’t really like poetry much then this wouldn’t really interest you. But I still feel like it is important to read because it gives you a different perspective to look at life from. And it really gives you insight into what these different things look like.

Overall I highly recommend this book. It is beautifully written and easy to follow, all while still making you think. I believe it is an important book that contains the many beautiful and not so beautiful moments in life. Depression & Other Magic Tricks is available on amazon and buttonpoetry.com
