Capretta looks to lead team into deep playoff run
Last year, Aurora’s Varsity Hockey Team ended the season after a second round defeat in the state playoffs and a semi-final appearance in the local Baron Cup. This year, led by star player and captain, Joe Capretta, the boys and girls of Aurora Hockey look to improve on last year’s postseason efforts.
Junior Aurora student Joe Capretta has been playing hockey since the age of four, always demonstrating a skill for skating. Joe and his brother, Nick, have both played hockey since an early age and they now play together on Aurora’s Varsity team.
“We were always pretty competitive, trying to beat each other at everything. I think it pushed us both to be better,” Capretta said.
Last season, Capretta scored 69 goals in 27 games, breaking the previously steadfast Aurora record of 64. This year, Capretta has recorded a total 56 points thus far. Points, in hockey, being the sum of a player’s goals and assists.
The team is having an average season so far, with 10 wins, 10 losses, and 3 ties to date.
When asked about his team’s record, Capretta told The Gambit, “I think it’s just a matter of us trying to find our groove. We have games where we get in rhythm and dominate teams, but when that falls apart, we struggle.”
To the eye of a casual viewer at an Aurora hockey game, it quickly becomes apparent that Joe Capretta is a level above the rest. However, If you asked him, he’d argue that he is a product of the team around him.
Capretta has expressed interest in a career in college hockey, but will not shy away in telling anyone that baseball is his original passion. For now, he is focussed on a deep playoff run this year and attempting to break yet another record.
