Aurora Graduate Looks For New Perspective Studying Abroad
As a student at the University of Findlay, Aurora graduate Chrysta Blechschmid has decided to study abroad for a portion of her sophomore year. Determined to push herself outside her limits, she hopes to return with more knowledge, both academically and culturally.
Seeing as her final application and paperwork go smoothly, Blechschmid will be studying in Cuzco, Perú, from early September to early December, 2017. Ran through the ISA (International Studies Abroad), she will stay with a host family for the entirety of her trip and attend la Universidad de Salamanca. Once there, Blechschmid will study Spanish as well as Peruvian and Incan Cultural.
“The program also has excursions along with it like visiting Machu Picchu, The Sacred Valley, and Lake Titicaca,” she explained.
Blechschmid travelled to the Dominican Republic recently, an experience that heavily influenced her decision to study abroad in South America. Her infatuation with culture and ways of life outside the US is opening doors to new, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Regarding her time after her Dominican trip, she said, “I really wanted to investigate new cultures and how other people find happiness. Perú has a very specific culture that I’m excited to get to know.”
Of course, all 3-month trips outside the country come with some concerns. Being away from family, travelling alone, and simply living in a foreign country all will have a certain affect on Blechschmid, but she has the drive and determination to overcome them.
Blechschmid expressed the most excitement when talking about immersing herself in the culture of Perú, participating in the various excursions, and, hopefully, getting to fulfill her goal of hugging a llama. However, possibly the best aspect of her trip will be the change in perspective, something she previously experienced during her Dominican trip.
“Changing your perspective and critically thinking is a good thing. I am a much more grateful person, I find myself happier with the little things in life and not taking things for granted,” she said.
Blechschmid hopes to gain a greater sense of acceptance and become more outgoing with new people, cultures, and experiences. She feels this trip will increase her confidence and independence as a person. She also hopes to become more fluid in Spanish during her time in Perú, an attribute that could open several doors for her in the future.
Overall, Chrysta Blechschmid is hopeful and excited for her upcoming trip, remarking, “I think that this experience will have a very positive impact on my life as a whole, and will make me a better, more well rounded and educated individual.”
