The Crown: Netflix's Golden Globe winning new drama

The Crown is Netflix’s most recent series which follows the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the one Great Britain has now, and describes the challenges faced by a new queen after her father, the man who helped England through WWII, King George VI, dies of lung cancer. It shows all sides of some famous figures of British Government, like the Queen and Winston Churchill, and makes them more human. We see Queen Elizabeth as a grieving daughter, a wife, a mother, and as a young, new Queen, not just the smiling elderly woman we know her as today.

The Queen is portrayed by Claire Foy, who artistically and properly plays the Queen. Even her accent seems to be a perfect match, (albeit this is an American’s opinion.)

This is not the historical, documentary-like series most expect. This shows the human side of the royals and government figures who served over our friends across the pond for the majority of the 20th century. The Crown shows them as people, human beings with emotions and motivations, and not as the perfectly prim and resolute masterpieces in our history books. It depicts a frankly frightened and ill-prepared queen who puts emotion pain and turmoil aside to serve the people of the world’s most famous monarchy.

All in all, this series not only teaches a thing or two about history but also allows the watcher to peer through the keyholes of Buckingham Palace’s doors, and see how each decision was made, how every plan and plot was calculated and executed, and what life is truly like when one is living under the great burden of The Crown.
