A satirical recap of the week: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is currently in its 3rd season on HBO. It is a satirical news show that resembles The Daily Show, which Oliver wrote for, earning himself two Emmy awards. The show has gained recent popularity due to the 2016 election, and, while the show definitely has a liberal bias, it is still enjoyable by everyone.

Tyler Theiding, Senior and Trump supporter, said, "Despite the occasional fallacious argument, the show is quite enjoyable and offers a much lighter take on the news and current social issues."”

Last Week Tonight skillfully combines facts, comedy, antics, and serious tones. For example, a few weeks ago, on Last Week Tonight, Oliver began talking about the election, or, as he calls it, “The electoral equivalent of seeing someone puking so you start puking and then someone else is puking and pretty soon everyone is puking 2016.” Then very quickly he switches gears and begins talking about political scandals both candidates have faced, including the Clinton Foundation and Trump University, etc, and then, he compares political scandals to raisins… Sounds weird, I know, just stick with me. He says that scandals are like raisins in a cookie, (the cookie being the politician) and unfortunately, most politicians have a few raisins. He says that Hillary is a cookie with more raisins than average, but then, he compares Trump to “a [expletive] raison monsoon.” And then a ton of raisins begin falling from the ceiling, coating his desk in an unimaginable amount of the dried fruit. Even if you don’t agree with his opinion, you have to admit the man has a certain moxy, for lack of a better word.

This show has a fun way of educating on serious topics, like opioid drugs and police accountability, and all of the stories are heavily researched and fact-supported. So, if you enjoy watching a British man making fun of American politics, shower in raisins, creating his own televangelist church and raising funds for it (the money collected by which all went to Doctors Without Borders) to prove that there are no laws against them, and filming a doggy supreme court, Last Week Tonight is for you. It airs Sunday nights at 11 p.m. on HBO.
