The school-wide emails continue
Recently, my colleague and classmate wrote an article about the unprofessional surveys being sent out to the entire school population, as well as teachers, by students. Since then, there has been a series of emails also sent to the student population about various ridiculous things, including the latest ongoing Mentos boycott. Needless to say, this is getting out of hand.
It appears that every student in the school now has access to sending out mass emails to each class and teachers. This began last year when AP Environmental Science students needed to send out surveys for a class project. It’s likely that when other students saw this was a possibility, they figured out the email addresses to be able to do so themselves.
While surveys asking for an opinion on different social issues or environmental problems are not a big deal, getting five emails from random students about boycotting the Mentos in the cafeteria bookstore because of a raise in pricing is ridiculous. One of the emails is entirely in German, and each one seems to be taking famous speeches and documents and rearranging them to seem as if they are about Mentos. Why a student would take the time to write and send these emails is, frankly, beyond me. It seems like there are plenty of better, more productive things to be doing; for example, one could binge a show on Netflix instead of bothering people with absurd paragraphs on a candy.
Personally, I would propose changing the system used to send these school-wide emails. There should be a procedure in place where when a student would like to send out a survey or reminder to every student in the school. Perhaps the administration could change the current emails or only allow teachers to send these emails. If a student needs to send out a survey for a class, the teacher of the class can send out the survey for them. It would likely make the surveys more professional, and we could avoid wasting time on an inbox full of jokes and pranks.
Hopefully something like the aforementioned system could be put in place soon. As of now though, it seems like our main concern for the school is increasing Mentos prices.
