Disney scores another hit with animated feature Zootopia

Disney’s newest film opened in theaters this month, bringing in crowds of families across the country, and winning the weekend box office for three weeks in a row before being dethroned by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zootopia is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tale of Officer Hopps.

The movie focuses on a rabbit named Judy Hopps who becomes a police officer for the big city Zootopia, where prey and predators supposedly live in peace. As the first bunny on the police team, she faces some hardships. When she finally gets her first big case, she has to team up with double-dealing fox Nick Wilde in order to save Zootopia and her career.

The discrimination they both face in the animal-ridden world somewhat resembles the issues we are having in the real world today, so the message to accept others and that anyone can be anything is a great message to spread, especially in a subtle way like this. All of the animals featured are well-built, realistic characters and definitely appeal to children and adults alike. My personal favorite was Flash, the sloth, a minor character with a nice twist to him at the end. Although it is a little predictable, the script is clever and full of smart humor.

The soundtrack was also a nice touch. Shakira’s song “Try Everything” was featured in the movie, along with bouncy, rhythmic instrumentals, each matching the tone of the scenes and contributing to the film as a whole. The composer, Michael Giacchino, has also worked on Up and Inside Out, so it’s no surprise the score is impressive.

The animation was also an impressive part of the film. The animated sets and animals were so fully detailed they were almost life-like. Each creature, no matter if their part was big or small, has a unique design and every inch of scale, fur, or skin fleshed out like a real animal. Geeks of Doom reported that Disney animation studios studied animal fur down to a microscopic level in order to create realistic animation for the movie.

In the end, this is a great film down to every detail, and although it is meant for kids, anyone can enjoy this movie. Zootopia is still in theaters this month, so there’s plenty of time to get in on Disney’s latest flick.
