NHS book drive collects 200 books
This past week National Honors Society conducted a book drive for students to donate gently used books. Boxes were located in English classrooms for students to place their books in. Students were told to donate books used in English class, ACT/SAT workbooks or pleasure books.
Caroline Lukehart and Genna Cimoroni thought of the book drive idea together. They wanted to organize something that would benefit the school as a whole.
Lukehart said, “We realized that a lot of our clubs do amazing work in the community outside, but the people that we pass in the halls everyday are part of that community, too. So we thought, what can we do to help the community INSIDE the school.”
The majority of students at AHS buy books for English class, but then never use them again. This is another reason that prompted NHS to conduct a book drive. “We thought of all the books that former students had somewhere at home, and we knew most of those books would never be read again. We figured if we collected enough of them, students wouldn't have to spend money getting books next year,” said Lukehart.
Genna Cimoroni expressed that she wanted to have a book drive so students would not have to purchase a new book every couple weeks. Cimoroni said, “I wanted to start this in order to help kids who may not be able to afford the new books that are required for their English class. I thought this would make it less stressful for kids who worry about buying a $3-$10 book every 2 weeks.”
This year's book drive was a success. NHS collected a great variety of books for students to read. Lukehart said, “We collected close to 200 books.”
Hopefully in the years to come, NHS continues to conduct a yearly book drive so there are more books for students to read and pass along to others.
