AHS Chamber Singers perform at Cavs game in January

On Monday, January 25, the Aurora High School Chamber Singers performed at the Cleveland Cavaliers V. Minnesota Timberwolves at Quicken Loans Arena.

Choir teacher Sarah Dixon said, “ It was a little intimidating to be on Center Court with players from both teams, and 20,000 fans - but the choir gave a solid performance.”

The choir students also enjoyed the opportunity to sing at the game. Junior singer Molly Madill said, “I saw Lebron James and all of them up close so that was pretty cool.”

Dixon and the choir students got pretty close to the Cavs players. “We didn't officially meet any of the players, but the students created the high-five tunnel for the Minnesota Timberwolves and we were within arm's reach of Lebron right before we sang,” said Dixon.

The choir got to sing the National Anthem for the performance. “It's the Chamber Singers recording of the Star Spangled Banner that's been playing on Monday morning announcements the last couple of times,” said Dixon about the rehearsals beforehand.

Since the Cavs were celebrating Australia Day at the same game, Australian singer Cody Simpson was also present. “Cody Simpson performed the Australian National Anthem right before we sang the Star Spangled Banner,” said Dixon. “A handful of students got to meet him after the performance.”

“Meeting Cody Simpson was pretty cool, I got a selfie with him,” said Junior Abbey Ingram.

Although the choir has never performed at a Cavs game before, they sang the National Anthem at a Lake Erie Monsters game last year. “This was a step up from last year, so that was exciting,” said Carli Reitz, junior.

At the Lake Erie Monsters performance, the group sales representative for the Q was impressed and asked them to sing at the Cavs game.

Dixon hopes the choir will get this opportunity next year and said, “This was an incredible experience that I hope becomes a yearly tradition!”

If you missed the performance in person or on television, you can watch it here from the school website.
