The cabin in the woods

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica begins when Mia Dennet is stood up by her so called boyfriend and approached by a stranger. He introduces himself as Colin Thatcher and takes Mia back to his apartment where she soon becomes skeptical of his intentions. She quickly grabs her things and tries to leave, but Colin forbids her from doing so. Mia is shoved aggressively into the car and taken to a secluded cabin in the rural wilderness of Minnesota. Mia’s family soon realizes her disappearance. Mia’s mother, Eve and detective Gabe Hoffman sedulously work to find Mia and her captor. The emotional turmoil and stress of this experience causes unbelievable entanglements within Mia and her family’s life.

Mary Kubica wrote this novel switching the perspectives each chapter from Eve, Colin and Gabe. The perspectives switch from before the kidnapping and after and demonstrate the feelings and emotions of each character.

Mary Kubica is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Good Girl and Pretty Baby. She majored in American literature and History and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University.

The overall quality of Mary Kubica’s writing was satisfactory. She did a wonderful job explaining characters emotion, but lacked developing plot. The novel is a slow read and takes time before the plot is developed. There was not an evident theme conveyed throughout the novel.

The differing viewpoints each chapter made it all the more interesting to read. Every page was filled with mystery and suspense of not knowing what will happen next. Kubica’s descriptive writing creates vivid images of the setting and makes the reader feel as if she is there.

This novel is a good read if you excuse its lack of theme. I would recommend it to female young adults who loves thrill and mystery.
