Veterans Day Brunch

On November 11th, Aurora High School's National Honors Society, hosted a banquet in order to honor the veterans of the community.

Students of all grade levels were eligible to attend the banquet, which lasted two periods, if they invited a veteran. NHS advisor, Jennifer Simmerman, was in charge of the banquet and its entailment. When asked what the purpose of the banquet was, Senior Mackenzie Baldwin said, “To honor our veterans and the freedom we now hold because of them.”

The veterans were invited by AHS students, however it was not through word of mouth. Formal invitations were given due to the formality of the event, and the honor that comes along with it. There was not a traditional ceremony, however there were speeches given by students, including Seniors Sam Iamarino, Haley Gromack, Anna Schostek, Caroline Lukehart, and Emma Pollock.

“I feel honored to be speaking in front of such a prestigious group of people,” said Gromack.

The Unaccompanied Minors sang Stand by Me, by Ben E King and a smaller group consisting of Junior, Emily Delis and Seniors Rachel Willis, Sarah Most and Charlene Westfall, sang Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, receiving a standing ovation.

“The performances and speeches were fantastic, and everyone we met were so wonderful,” said performer Anna Schostek.

Music was played during the banquet as well, creating into the patriotic atmosphere. The banquet served eggs, sausage, potatoes, biscuits and baked goods. The baked goods were donated from students, who received volunteer hours for their baking.

When asked about the food, Senior Ryan Gavalier said, “It was magnificent, and the sausage was the best.”

Overall, the banquet received a great review from both student participants, and the veterans themselves. It was a quality experience, and opportunity to get to know the people who fought for the freedoms and rights that students at AHS, and students worldwide now hold.
